Why Do We Celebrate Mother's Day?

Mother's Day is a special occasion celebrated around the world to show appreciation for the maternal figures in our lives. In the UK this year (2023), Mother's Day falls on Sunday 19th March. Whether it's our biological mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, or any other mother-like figures, this day is dedicated to celebrating the love and care they give us year-round. So, why do we celebrate Mother's Day, and what makes it so important?

To show our appreciation
One of the key reasons we celebrate Mother's Day is to show our mothers just how much we appreciate them. Mothers play an incredibly important role in our lives, providing love, support, and guidance throughout our upbringing and beyond. This day is a chance to take a step back and show them just how grateful we are for everything they do, and to let them know that they are loved and appreciated.

To bring the family together
Another reason we celebrate Mother's Day is to bring families together. Mother's Day provides a special opportunity for families to come together, spend quality time with one another, and make lasting memories. Whether it's through a special meal, a day out, or simply a heartfelt card or gift, Mother's Day is a time for families to show their love and affection for one another.

To remember or reflect
For some people, Mother's Day is also a time to reflect on their own experiences as a mother or to remember a mother who has passed away. Whether it's through spending time with their own children or reminiscing about happy memories, Mother's Day can be a special and emotional occasion for many people. It might be a time to visit the cemetery, or look through a photo album to remember them.

How can you celebrate?
When it comes to these kinds of occasions, they can be whatever you want them to be. If you love the commercial aspect then hit the shops and buy some cute gifts- chocolates, candles, pyjamas, jewellery and alcohol are all popular. Plants and flowers are also a good choice, and the shops will be filled with them around Mother's Day, or you could put together a DIY Mother's Day hamper. If you hate that side of things or you're on a budget then how about a homemade card, or cooking a special meal? It could simply be spending quality time together, a nice walk, pamper day at home or a movie night. Whatever you choose to do, the most important thing is to show your mother just how much she means to you and to let her know that she is loved and appreciated. Don't just go generic, make plans or gifts that you and your mum will genuinely enjoy rather than things being for the sake of it.

Mother's Day is an opportunity to celebrate the love and care that our mothers give us all year round. So, take the time to show your mother just how much she means to you and enjoy this special occasion!
